The Ink Speaks to You.
A single stroke across the paper breathes quietly in the silence.
The moment the brush touches the surface, the ink spreads, pauses, and flows like a living thing.
Calligraphy is not simply “the act of writing characters.”
It is an art form in which the writer’s breath, heartbeat, and the emotions of that very moment are inscribed directly onto the paper.
The work I would like to introduce today was created by calligrapher Shourin Iwasaki——
“Love is the Heartbeat of Life”
The moment you encounter these words, doesn’t something stir deep within your chest?

The Power Behind “Love is the Heartbeat of Life”
A heartbeat is the rhythm of the heart.
As long as we are alive, it never stops.
Whether we are conscious of it or not, whether we are asleep or awake, the heart keeps beating.
Love, too, is something like that.
The memory of falling for someone, the grief of losing someone dear, the warmth of holding a child close — all of these are heartbeats born from the emotion we call love.
As long as love exists, a person can keep living.
When love is lost, a person begins to question the meaning of life itself.
Love and heartbeat.
When these two words are placed together, it feels as though all of human life is distilled into that single phrase.
The Japanese language holds many profound words connected to love:
- Aizō (愛憎) — To love and to hate. Both are fierce emotions, and they are two sides of the same coin.
- Aiseki (愛惜) — The feeling of cherishing and clinging to something precious.
- Hakuai (博愛) — To love all people without distinction; universal love.
- Jiai (慈愛) — A deep, warm affection, like the love of a parent for a child.
- Shisei ikkan (至誠一貫) — Unwavering sincerity. The essence of love, too, lies in this steadfast honesty.
And among four-character idioms——
“Ichigo ichie (一期一会)”
Treasure every encounter, for it will never recur.
To love someone is, perhaps, precisely this accumulation of once-in-a-lifetime moments.
Meeting that person, sharing that instant together — all of it becomes the heartbeat that weaves the story we call life.

A Poem Born from the Brush

The ink-laden brush descends upon the paper.
The character for love (愛) cradles the character for heart (心) within it.
To love is to offer up one’s heart.
Defenselessly, without hesitation — simply to offer it.
The character for heartbeat (鼓動) carries within it the character for strength (力).
To keep beating.
To never rest.
Whether seen by anyone or not, whether thanked by anyone or not, the heart simply keeps on beating.
May love be the same.
Asking nothing in return, knowing no weariness, beating quietly, powerfully, within you — as the heartbeat that never fades.
Shourin Iwasaki’s brush etched that prayer onto the page.
Shourin Iwasaki — An Artist Who Lives in Words
Shourin Iwasaki is a calligrapher who faces ink every day, giving form to the power of language through his art.
Calligraphy is not a technique for writing characters “correctly.”
It is the act of breathing life into them.
The same character — love — takes on an entirely different expression depending on who holds the brush.
Written in anger, the strokes tremble; written in stillness, the lines flow free and open.
What lives in Shourin Iwasaki’s works is a reverence for language, and a warm regard for those who receive it.
When he chose the phrase “Love is the Heartbeat of Life” and turned to face the paper — how much feeling must have ridden upon that brush?
As you gaze at the finished work, the characters seem to speak to you.
In your life, too, there is a heartbeat.
As long as you feel love, it will not stop.
