Like a Flame, Burning with the Soul — “Passion” by Calligrapher Shourin Iwasaki

A Cry of the Soul, Carved in Red.

Black ink dances across a blazing red page.

Golden droplets scatter like stars, and the stroke of the brush cuts through the air like wind.
Two characters written there — “Passion”.

The moment you see them, something stirs deep in your chest.
These are not merely words.
They are a cry of the soul, unleashed by calligrapher Shourin Iwasaki with every ounce of his being.

The Power Held Within the Word “Passion”

Passion — an intense feeling of being drawn to something, a heart that burns and blazes.
(情) speaks to the movement of the heart, the flow of emotion.
Netsu (熱) goes beyond mere temperature — it is an energy that burns.

When these two characters come together, something awakens: the ember that had been sleeping within us.

Kindness flows outward — emotion, too, is something that moves toward others.
Frenzy, longing, zeal — every word that carries the character for “heat” holds the power to push forward.

“Passionate,” “a person of passion,” “Passion Continent” — no matter what word it joins, passion always sets something in motion.

In the tradition of four-character idioms, consider “Nenbino Kyū” (燃眉之急) — the urgency of eyebrows catching fire, pressing forward even in the most critical of moments.
Or “Ichii Senshin” (一意専心) — the posture of focusing one’s entire heart on a single thing, moving ahead without hesitation.
Passion, surely, is nothing less than the very flame of this wholehearted devotion.

The World of “Passion” Born from the Brush

This new work by Shourin Iwasaki features the word passion written boldly across a wide horizontal sheet of red paper.

The vivid vermilion background calls to mind a sky ablaze at sunset — or perhaps a raging fire that the artist has leapt into headfirst.
The black ink lines are thick and powerful, yet somewhere in them there is freedom, a sense of release.
You can see the speed of the brush.
You can almost hear him breathe.

And then — the golden splashes.

Like beads of sweat, like tears, or like stars scattered across a night sky, flecks of gold are strewn across the paper. This is no accident.
It is light, deliberately unleashed by the artist’s hand.
Passion always carries with it a brilliance.
The golden splashes tell that story.

In the lower left, a small seal — the artist’s mark.
His pride as a calligrapher, quietly but firmly imprinted.

What Shourin Iwasaki Pours into His Calligraphy

Calligraphy is not simply the skill of writing characters.

When he picks up the brush, the artist faces the meaning of each word head-on.
To write passion, he must first summon it from within himself — without that, no true line can be born.

The reason Shourin Iwasaki’s work stirs the hearts of those who see it is that genuine emotion lives inside it.
A living line that technique alone could never produce.
It stirs the feelings of the viewer, awakening the passion that had been lying dormant.

Calligraphy is a poem without words.
It is music without sound, played by ink and paper.

A flame is most beautiful when it burns.
So too is a person — most radiant when they are filled with passion.

What It Means to Live with “Passion” on Your Wall

Imagine hanging this piece in your room.

Every morning, when you open your eyes.
When you come home worn out at the end of a long day.
When you are on the verge of giving up on something.

The two characters passion are there.
The red background and the bold strokes of black ink speak to you — quietly, but with certainty.

“Are you still burning?”

A work of calligraphy is not merely beautiful.
It becomes a presence that goes on asking you that question, every single day.
That is the greatest power Shourin Iwasaki’s work holds.
