“Courage” — Words of the Soul, Spoken in Ink. The Latest Work by Calligrapher Shourin Iwasaki

The Truth of Life, Held in a Single Brushstroke.

Black ink dances across a white page.

How is it that something so simple can move the human heart so deeply?

“Courage (勇気, yūki)” — the latest work newly brushed by calligrapher Shourin Iwasaki.
Bold strokes slash across the paper with the force of a blade, yet they coexist with a gentle softness in the white space around them.
Gaze at this piece for a moment, and something remarkable happens: your spine quietly straightens on its own.

The Depth of the Word “Courage”

Courage — when did you last truly call this word to mind?

Written with the characters for “brave spirit,” the Japanese word yūki traces its roots to the most fundamental human force: the will to step forward even in the face of fear and adversity.
It is not about being fearless.
On the contrary, the essence of courage lies in the will to move forward precisely because one knows fear.

For centuries, this word has sustained people in countless forms:

  • “Yūkan” (勇敢) — to face danger without flinching; bold and daring
  • “Yūmō kakan” (勇猛果敢) — fierce in spirit, filled with decisive resolve
  • “Ikki tōsen” (一騎当千) — possessing the courage and strength of a thousand men
  • “Hyakusetsu futō” (百折不撓) — bending not, no matter how many times one is broken

Of these, hyakusetsu futō may capture the very soul of courage most perfectly.
Broken a hundred times, yet never truly bent.
Tossed by the storms of life, yet the core remains unbroken — it is a tribute to that way of living.

“Courage is not the absence of fear. It is the judgment that something else matters more than fear, and the decision to act.”

It was the weight of these words that Shourin Iwasaki sought to pour into ink.

The World of “Courage,” Born from the Brush

In this work, the two characters are arranged with breathtaking boldness across the page.

The character “勇” (brave) rises powerfully in the upper right — its sharp entry strokes and thick, unwavering lines carry the force of something splitting bedrock.
Then the eye travels naturally to the lower left, where “気” (spirit) flows in sweeping curves, warm and soft, guiding the gaze from the strength of to the gentleness of ki.

This contrast is the very essence of Shourin Iwasaki’s art.

Tenderness within strength.
Breath within power.
And above all — the calligrapher’s own rhythm of breathing is imprinted in the depth and lightness of the ink itself.

Calligraphy is not merely the art of writing characters beautifully.
Every feeling of the moment, the state of the body that day, and everything the artist has accumulated over a lifetime — all of it lives in each stroke.
That is why Shourin Iwasaki’s “Courage” speaks directly to something deep inside whoever beholds it.

When We Need Courage, We Reach for Something to Hold On To

Everyone has a moment when they want to stop.

When you hit a wall at work.
When a precious relationship becomes a source of pain.
That sensation — so close to fear — right before you take a new step into the unknown.
In those moments, words can become medicine.
Words can become light.

To hang a piece inscribed with “courage” in your room is to face that word anew every single morning.
Each time it catches your eye without thinking, it seeps a little deeper into your heart.
Not an over-the-top pep talk, not an intrusive message — just a quiet, constant presence.

That, I believe, is the true power a work of calligraphy holds.

In Closing — Listen Closely to the Voice of the Ink

Since ancient times, calligraphy has been called shinga (心画) — “a painting of the heart.”
It is said to be a direct reflection of the artist’s inner world, made visible on the page.

The two characters of “Courage” that Shourin Iwasaki brushed onto paper are still speaking, quietly, right now.

— Come. Take that one step forward.

You can already hear that voice.
