A trail of ink races across a white sheet of paper.
Bold, expansive, yet somehow warm——.
When calligrapher Shourin Iwasaki takes up his brush and faces the page, what is born there is far more than mere “letters.”
The memories, emotions, and time itself held within each word are sealed into the paper, stroke by stroke.
The work we introduce today is a piece written with a single word: “family.”

Tracing the Origins of the Two Characters in “Family”
Unraveling the etymology of the word “family” (家族, kazoku) reveals the most fundamental aspects of human existence.
The character “家” (ka, house) is a pictograph depicting a pig (豕, inoko) sheltered beneath a roof (宀).
In ancient times, livestock symbolized wealth and were carefully protected under one’s roof.
The character “族” (zoku, clan) shows arrows gathering beneath a banner (㫃), meaning “people who come together under the same flag.”
In other words, family means those who protect one another under the same roof and point their arrows in the same direction.
Thousands of years of human life are carved into those two kanji characters.
Family is the place you return to,
and also the place from which you set out.
Warmth is something the body remembers
before words ever can.

Words That Grew from “Family”

With these two characters at their core, the Japanese language has given birth to a rich variety of compound words and four-character idioms.
家族団欒 — Kazoku Danran The whole family gathered together, spending time in warmth and harmony. A scene from the timeless Japanese past, gathered around the hearth.
一家団結 — Ikka Danketsu The family uniting as one, pooling their strength. A phrase that speaks to the power of bonds.
家内安全 — Kanai Anzen Every member of the family living in good health and peace. Since ancient times, a prayer offered up to the gods.
子孫繁栄 — Shison Han’ei The lives of a family continuing on, passed down from one generation’s children to the next. A wish for the flourishing of one’s descendants.
The Soul’s Trajectory, Told by the Brush
When Shourin Iwasaki wrote this “family,” his brush moved with boldness and ease.
The character “家” begins in the upper right, as though a great roof were spreading wide.
The “族” that follows sweeps powerfully from a slightly lower position, as if nestling beneath that same roof.
Rooted in the cursive (sōsho) and semi-cursive (gyōsho) scripts, his style values capturing the very tremor of emotion over adherence to rigid correctness.
The dry brush’s “scratch” (kasure) and the ink-laden brush’s “bloom” (nijimu) are both fully intentional——both alive.
In the lower left, a crimson seal (rakkan) rests quietly.
It is the artist’s signature, and at the same time a still testament: “With this word, in this moment, I was here.”
I think the scent of ink is the scent of time.
The characters that have been written do not disappear.
Every time he writes the word “family,”
someone’s face comes to mind.
Calligraphy is both “an art you see” and “an art you feel.”
When framed and hung on a wall, the people in that room encounter those words every single day.
In the morning, before heading off to work.
In the evening, coming home and saying, “I’m back.”
When the meaning held within the characters themselves meets the brushstroke in which a calligrapher’s soul resides, a single work of calligraphy surpasses mere decoration and takes on the power to transform the space itself.
