“Meaning in Life” — The Voice of Your Soul, Asked by Ink

A Philosophy Dwelling in a Single Stroke.

A trail of deep black ink spreads across the paper.
With every sweep of the brush, silence breaks — and words are born.

Standing before Meaning in Life, a work by calligrapher Shourin Iwasaki, I was wrapped in a strange sensation.
It was not that I was “reading” the characters — it felt as though the characters were “questioning” me.

What is your meaning in life?

The Depth of the Word “Ikigai”

“Ikigai (生き甲斐)” — a word said to exist only in the Japanese language — cannot be translated directly into English.

Iki (生き) = to live, life
Gai (甲斐) = value, meaning, a sense of worth

In other words, ikigai is the value of life itself, or that which gives living its meaning.

In recent years, this concept has attracted worldwide attention.
It is used as-is in romanized form — “IKIGAI” — in the work of philosophers and researchers studying longevity alike.
The Japanese concept of ikigai has spread across the globe as a truly universal idea.

What the Character “Kai” Tells Us

The word “kai (甲斐)” itself carries profound meaning.

  • Kai ga aru — to feel that one’s efforts have paid off; a sense of tangible reward
  • Kaishou — the capability and spirit to live life with purpose and strength
  • Hataraki-gai — finding meaning in one’s work
  • Iki-gai — the reason one’s life burns bright

“Kai” is also the old provincial name of Yamanashi Prefecture — a land of people who lived surrounded by steep mountains, facing a demanding nature.
It may be no coincidence that this place name shares its word with “meaning” and “reward.”
It is precisely in harsh conditions that human beings most deeply question the meaning of being alive.

Poetic Words That Resonate with Meaning in Life

The Japanese language holds many expressions that harmonize with the spirit of ikigai.

Ichi-go Ichi-e (一期一会) This single encounter will never come again. That is why we meet it with everything we have. When a calligrapher lowers his brush to the page, that moment, too, is ichi-go ichi-e — a once-in-a-lifetime instant. The indelible line of ink marks the passing of time that can never be reclaimed.

Futou Fukutsu (不撓不屈) The spirit that bends before no hardship, that never breaks and keeps pressing forward. Within those who hold a true meaning in life, this flame burns without end.

Shoshi Kantetsu (初志貫徹) To see through, to the very end, the aspiration one first held in one’s heart. The fact that Shourin Iwasaki chose the path of calligraphy — and still holds his brush today — is the living embodiment of these words.

Jiyuu Kattatsu (自由闊達) To live freely, bound by nothing, with an open and expansive spirit. This four-character phrase quietly accompanies the sense of liberation held within the very idea of meaning in life.

Why Shourin Iwasaki Writes “Meaning in Life”

He faces a single sheet of paper.
He steadies his breath.
He takes up the brush.

In that sequence of movements, meaning in life already exists.

For Shourin Iwasaki, calligraphy is not mere technique.
It is a dialogue with the soul — an attempt to pour emotion into every single character, and to express the essence of words through the gradations of ink, the speed of the brush, the breath of negative space.

Looking at the work Meaning in Life, there is a vivid dynamism in the flow of the characters.
The character for “life” (生) stretches powerfully upward; “ki” (き) sways with gentle softness; “ga” (が) is thick and bold, as if rooting itself into the earth; and “i” (い) comes to a close, leaving a lingering resonance.

It is almost like being born, growing, taking root, and one day quietly shining — an entire human life.

The Poetry Called Negative Space

In calligraphy, negative space — the blank areas of the paper — is just as important as the characters themselves.

The expanse of white — it is not an empty space where nothing has been written.
It is, in fact, the place where the characters speak most eloquently.

The negative space in Shourin Iwasaki’s works is quiet and deep.
It receives the strength of the characters and sets the viewer’s imagination free.

Try laying your own answer over the negative space within Meaning in Life.

What do you wake up for?
What can you lose yourself in?
What can you do to bring a smile to someone’s face?

The answer exists nowhere but within you.

On Instagram: Witness the Moment of Creation

A work of calligraphy is not defined solely by the moment it is complete.

The instant the brush meets the paper.
The one second the ink bleeds and spreads.
The held breath — and the release.

The process itself is the work.
