A Storm Was Born on Paper.
I was transfixed.
Jet-black ink racing across a white page.
An unstoppable speed and sense of weight.
An overwhelming presence that seems impossible to have been born from a single brushstroke.
This is calligrapher Shourin Iwasaki’s new work — “Press Forward”.
The first character, 突, opens with a bold, rounded stroke where power seems to gather at the top, then releases all at once in a downward flow.
The dry brushwork resonates like the sound of wind being split open.
The second character, 進, is defined by a sweeping stroke that extends boldly to the right.
Even the moment the brush lifted from the paper has been left behind as part of the work.
That line is still moving.
This two-character piece is a still image — and yet it holds an unmistakable sense of motion.
The longer you look, the more you feel something pressing forward, deep into your chest.

The Primal Energy Held Within the Words “Press Forward”
突進 (Tosshin) means to charge ahead in a straight line with fierce intensity.
The character 突 is said to originate from a pictograph depicting a dog leaping out of a hole.
Energy stored within a confined space exploding outward in a single instant — that image is sealed within this one character.
進 means to advance, to move forward.
It is also said to derive from the image of a bird in flight, carrying with it a sense of lightness and direction.
When these two characters come together, what is born?
An unwavering will.
Don’t overthink it.
Don’t be afraid.
Just move forward.
Shourin Iwasaki’s brush has captured exactly that moment.

The Power of Words — Idioms Connected to “Press Forward”

Around the phrase “press forward,” a gathering of kindred words:
猪突猛進 (Chotsu Mōshin) To charge ahead with ferocious momentum toward a single point, like a wild boar. Heedless of those around — yet beneath that single-mindedness lies a strength unswayed by anything.
勇往邁進 (Yūō Maishin) To advance with courage toward one’s goal. The character 邁, meaning “to travel far,” gives this phrase an ambitious, far-reaching quality.
一往直前 (Ichō Chokuzen) To press straight ahead without hesitation. There is a clarity and cleanliness to this phrase that echoes the lines in Shourin Iwasaki’s work.
What each of these words shares is a fierce will directed forward.
A Poem: To Those Who Press Forward
There was a time when standing still felt like a sin.
No room to breathe — only running, always running.
And yet, it was only within that sprint that I felt it: the sensation of being alive.
To press forward is not to abandon weakness.
It is to carry weakness within you, and still face ahead.
Deep within that force — ink nearly breaking through paper — something soft, surely, makes its home.
Shourin Iwasaki’s brush poses the question: What are you pressing forward toward, right now?
