True Love Is Worth Waiting For — The Eternal Words Poured into the Brush by Calligrapher Shourin Iwasaki

An Encounter with a Single Work.

Bold yet somehow gentle, ink flows across gray washi paper.

“True love is worth waiting for.”

When calligrapher Shourin Iwasaki placed these words upon his brush, something beyond mere letters took shape.
The depth and delicacy of the ink, the fine dry strokes, the momentum of each line — calligraphy is an art in which the breath and heart of the moment of writing are imprinted directly onto the paper.
Standing before a finished work, the viewer does not simply read the characters; they touch the soul of the one who wrote them.

In this article, we invite you into the world of Shourin Iwasaki’s calligraphy, exploring the profound meaning behind these words.

Reading the Depth of “True Love Is Worth Waiting For”

The Weight Carried by the Character Shin (真) — “True”

Shin (真) means that which is without falsehood, without pretense — the authentic.

In Japanese, this single character lends an unwavering sincerity to words such as shinjitsu (真実, truth), shinshi (真摯, earnestness), and magokoro (真心, wholehearted sincerity).
In the world of calligraphy, shin also refers to kaisho — the formal, standard script style — representing the truest, most foundational form of all writing.

True love is not a passing emotion carried on trend, nor a fleeting surge of feeling.
Unlike a love that arrives like a storm and vanishes just as quickly, it is quiet as the earth itself — and just as immovable.

The Beauty of the Act of Waiting.

In Japanese, there is a character for “to wait”: 待.
It is composed of ninben (人偏), the human radical, beside tera (寺), meaning temple — an image of a person standing quietly at a temple, letting time pass in stillness.
Like Zen itself: movement found within the motionless.

To wait is not to do nothing.
It is to believe.
To trust.
To refuse to give up.

The feeling of waiting has deep roots in Japanese poetry across the ages.
In the Man’yōshū, Japan’s oldest poetry anthology, countless verses speak of longing for another’s arrival.
As if the very act of waiting were itself proof of love.

“Worth It” — The Meaning of Being Rewarded.

The Japanese word for “worth” — kachi (価値) — carries the resonance of kai ga aru (甲斐がある), meaning that one’s efforts and endurance will eventually bear fruit.
It is the hope that perseverance will be rewarded, the conviction that every moment spent waiting was never wasted.

“True love is worth waiting for” — running through this phrase as a whole is a gentle message: there is no need to rush.

The Poetry Woven by Words — Expressions of Love and Waiting

Ichi-go ichi-e (一期一会) Born from the world of the tea ceremony, this four-character phrase means “a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.” True love, too, is ichi-go ichi-e. That is precisely why each meeting must be cherished — nurtured carefully, without impatience.

Futō fukutsu (不撓不屈) To persevere through every hardship without yielding; to stay true to one’s convictions. Waiting for love can be lonely. It can be painful. Yet it is the spirit of futō fukutsu — indomitable will — that becomes the strength to one day hold true love in one’s hands.

Ishin denshin (以心伝心) Heart speaking to heart, beyond the reach of words. True love needs no language. Simply by being present, feelings are conveyed.

Shoshi kantetsu (初志貫徹) To carry through to the end the resolve held at the very beginning. To never abandon the feeling of love — to simply believe and keep waiting. That is the love of shoshi kantetsu.

The Art of Calligraphy — The World of Shourin Iwasaki

Calligraphy is an art that transcends the act of writing characters.
The trembling of the hand that holds the brush, the sound of ink meeting paper, the spreading bloom of each stroke — all of it becomes part of the work.

The characters Shourin Iwasaki writes carry not only beautiful form, but the very meaning of the words themselves.
When he put brush to paper for “True love is worth waiting for,” his every movement held within it an empathy for the act of waiting, and a deep reverence for the act of loving.

The contrast between thick lines and thin.
White space glimpsed within the dry-brushed strokes.
The harmony of kanji and hiragana dancing together.

In calligraphy, negative space is not emptiness. It is breath. It is ma — the pause, the interval — the emotion that flows between words and cannot itself be put into words.
The quiet strength that defines Shourin Iwasaki’s works is born precisely from his masterful command of this ma.

Feel the Atmosphere of These Words for Yourself

A single work of calligraphy does more than hang on a wall — it has the power to transform the very air of a space.

Imagine waking in the morning, and the words “True love is worth waiting for” entering your sight.
Something in how you carry the day might shift.
A restless heart finds stillness.
The importance of believing in something — in someone — comes quietly back to mind.

A calligraphy work is art you can have a conversation with, every single day.
