“Clear” ― The Stillness of a Soul Reflected in Ink

A Universe of Silence in a Single Character

“Clear.”

Just one character.
And yet, the moment you set eyes on it, you may feel a quiet breeze pass through the depths of your chest.

This is the character that calligrapher Shourin Iwasaki chose for this work.
Black ink confronts the white of the paper, and within bold, sweeping brushstrokes, a delicate breath resides.
At first glance the marks may seem abstract — and yet they unmistakably embody the very essence of the word “clear.”

The Power Held Within the Word “Clear”

To be clear is to be free of cloudiness, to be transparent through and through.
Water runs clear.
The air turns clear.
The mind becomes clear.

This word has taken deep root throughout the Japanese language, and its spirit travels just as naturally into English.

“Clear across(澄み渡るsumiwataru)” ― when sky or water becomes translucent to its very edges. The soaring autumn sky, a mountain stream rushing over smooth stones — no phrase captures that overwhelming sense of transparency better.

“Clarity” (清澄 seichō) ― the state of being pure and clear. Clarity of mind, clarity of water. A compound that points to the pinnacle of unspoiled purity.

“Crystal clear” (澄澈 chōtetsu) ― utterly transparent, right to the bottom. The kind of clarity where you can see the color of river stones through the surface — an overwhelming, absolute translucence.

And turning to four-character classical phrases, there is 心澄境寂 (kokoro sumi sakai sabishī) — “the heart is clear, and the surrounding realm rests in silence.”
Deeply connected to the world of Zen, this phrase seems to describe the very state that Shourin Iwasaki’s work strives to reach.

What It Means to Be “Clear” Within the Ink

Standing before Shourin Iwasaki’s work Clear, one is seized by a contradictory sensation.

Ink is black.
That is beyond question.
And yet what this piece radiates is not blackness — it is transparency.

The bold masses of black that claim the paper, and the white kasure (dry-brush streaks) that slice through them like light — these two forces seem to collide, and yet together they produce an almost uncanny stillness.
The calligrapher’s breath, the tension of the moment the brush first met the paper, the energy released in a single unbroken motion — all of it is sealed within this one work, held perfectly clear.

Calligraphy is an art that compresses time into a single instant.
Once the brush enters, there is no going back.
Hesitation bleeds into the ink.
That is precisely why, in order to produce a work that is truly clear, the calligrapher’s own heart must first be clear.

Looking at this piece, one can sense how deeply Shourin Iwasaki had entered the world of clear in that very moment — how fully he had become it.

Words Becoming Ink, Like Poetry

In the hour before an autumn dawn, the stars are still clear in the dark sky.
The river surface lies still, and the colors of the stones below are visible.
In that moment, words fall away, and only the sensation of clarity remains.

Shourin Iwasaki’s calligraphy is an attempt to fix precisely that kind of moment onto paper.
He seeks to express the core of what a word means — not through its reading or pronunciation, but through the weight of ink and the breathing of empty space.
This is a fusion of language and vision that only calligraphy, as a form of expression, makes possible.

Gazing at Clear, something inside you begins to settle.
The fine, accumulated cloudiness of busy days — it quietly sinks away.
That, I believe, is the power this work carries.
