Have you ever felt something through pure inspiration?
Not reason.
Not logic.
Just that moment when something stirs deep inside your chest.
Calligrapher Shourin Iwasaki struck two characters into paper with ink — “Inspiration.”
Many people are left speechless when they stand before this work.
They try to explain it, and can’t.
Something simply arrives.
And perhaps that is the very essence of this piece.

The Power Held Within the Word “Inspiration”
In Japanese, chokkan (直感) refers to the ability to instantly grasp the essence of something without the process of reasoning or logical thought.
In English, we call it inspiration — rooted in the Latin inspirare, meaning “to breathe into.”
The philosopher Kant once said: “Concepts without intuition are empty; intuition without concepts is blind.”
In other words, inspiration is not separate from intelligence — it is another kind of eye, one that supports the very foundation of human perception.
The word carries deep roots in the Japanese language and spirit:
- 直感力:Inspiration as ability — the power of instant judgment born from a refined sensitivity
- 直感的:Inspirational — a sensation close to instinct, transcending logic
- 霊感直感:Spiritual inspiration — the capacity to receive signals sent by the soul
- 直感知:Embodied knowing — wisdom that reads the world through the entire body
And in the world of Japanese four-character idioms, there exists the expression “直覚直観” (chokkaku chokkan) — to reflect the true nature of things like a mirror, free of all hesitation.
In the world of Zen, this is taught as the path toward enlightenment.
Black ink.
White paper.
Within the tension born between them, Shourin Iwasaki’s brush captured the two characters of “Inspiration.”

That Single Moment the Brush Moved

Calligraphy is an art with no room for do-overs.
On a computer, you can press Ctrl+Z.
In painting, you can layer over mistakes.
But calligraphy is different.
The moment the brush touches the paper, the work begins — and ends.
Look closely at Shourin Iwasaki’s “Inspiration.”
The upper character, 直 (choku / straight) — a line moves with complete directness, yet full of life.
As if a single beam of light descended from the sky, there is no hesitation.
And yet, it carries a warmth that is unmistakably human.
The lower character, 感 (kan / feeling) — a character of complex structure, captured by the brush with equal boldness and delicacy.
The radical 心 (kokoro, meaning “heart”) spreads at the base of the work like a foundation, lending the entire piece its depth.
Two characters.
One world.
The calligrapher writes “Inspiration” through inspiration itself, and the viewer receives it through their own.
In that exchange, words and sensation dissolve into one another on the page — that is the world of Shourin Iwasaki’s calligraphy.
A Poem — For “Inspiration”
Something arrived before the words did.
The chest already knew, before any explanation came.
Ink does not lie.
The brush reflects every hesitation.
And so the calligrapher bets everything on a single moment.
“Inspiration” — It is the small yet boundless window through which the soul opens itself to the world.
