The moment the brush meets the paper.
The ink does not hesitate.
It does not waver.
It simply releases what lives within the artist, exactly as it is, into the white expanse before it.
For calligrapher Shourin Iwasaki, this work carries two characters: “Perseverant.”
Deceptively simple, yet within the depths of this word lives the most essential strength a human being needs to move through life — quietly, and with tremendous power.

“Perseverant” — To Endure Is Not Merely to Wait
Look up the word “perseverance” in a dictionary and you will find something like:“the quality of continuing steadily despite difficulty or delay.”
But that only scratches the surface.
Look closely at the first character, 忍 (nin).
At the top sits 刃 — a blade. Beneath it, 心 — the heart.
A blade pressed against the heart, yet the heart does not break.
That is the true nature of this character.
The will to face forward even through pain — all of that weight is folded into a single brushstroke.
The second character, 耐 (tai), tells a similar story.
To “endure” is not a passive act of gritting one’s teeth.
It means to hold one’s form under pressure — an active, deliberate strength.
The way a bridge bears its load.
The way roots hold against a storm.
Perseverance is not stagnation.
It is preparation for what comes next.

A Universe of Words — The Legacy of “Perseverant”

The word opens outward into a rich world of expression.
隠忍自重 (Innin Jichō) — To keep one’s emotions hidden within and refrain from rash action. Waiting for the storm to pass, while the flame inside burns on.
百折不撓 (Hyakusetsu Futō) — To never yield, no matter how many times one is broken. To fall a hundred times and rise again each time. This four-character idiom speaks to the indomitable spirit that perseverance ultimately becomes.
“石の上にも三年:Even on a cold stone, three years” — This old Japanese proverb teaches that if you sit long enough on a cold stone, it will eventually warm beneath you. A quiet lesson in the power of continuity, and the quiet dignity of waiting.
“雨垂れ石を穿つ:Dripping water hollows out stone” — A single drop of rain, falling on the same spot thousands upon thousands of times, will in time pierce solid rock. Perseverance holds the power to change the world — it simply takes time.
Each of these expressions points to the same truth: perseverance is not weakness.
It is the deepest form of strength.
A Silent Poem in Ink
Now, look at Shourin Iwasaki’s work, “Perseverant.”
The brushstrokes cut across the paper with certainty — no hesitation, no retreat.
The interplay of deep ink and fading grey creates shadow and light that tell a story all their own.
Where the brush runs dry, the strokes begin to fray — and it is precisely in that fraying that the breath of the word can be heard.
Calligraphy, once completed, does not move.
Yet within that stillness, countless layers of time are folded together.
The years of practice that came before, the tension of the breath held just before brush meets paper, the release of the moment the ink flows — all of it is sealed within these two characters.
The viewer feels this.
Not with the mind.
With the body.
To stand before a work of calligraphy is to be quietly drawn back into oneself.
The day that didn’t go as planned.
The night you thought you could have pushed a little harder.
The time you kept going anyway.
The two characters of “Perseverant” receive all of that — gently, and without judgment.
You have endured. That is enough.
