“Satisfaction”──What the Heart Truly Desires

When you encounter the word “satisfaction,” what comes to mind?

Satisfaction means the fulfillment of what one has deeply wished for, or one’s original desire or hope.
Throughout the long journey of life, we pursue various dreams, set goals, sometimes face setbacks, and yet continue moving forward.
The state we reach at the end of that journey──that might be what we call “satisfaction.”

The two characters of “satisfaction” depicted by Shourin Iwasaki’s brush seem to dance with life itself.
The upper character “本” (hon) radiates a large, dignified presence while simultaneously holding a certain softness.
The lower character “望” (bou/mou) flowing downward contains both momentum and tranquility, deeply stirring the hearts of viewers.

The Story of Life, Told Through Ink

The charm of calligraphy as an art lies in its once-in-a-lifetime nature.
Even when attempting to write the same character, the same line can never be reproduced.
The breath of the person holding the brush, their state of mind, the humidity of the day, the concentration of the ink──all of these influence the work.

When gazing at this work “Satisfaction,” you can almost hear the artist’s breathing.
The intention embedded in each stroke, from the entry to the exit of the brush.
Even the splatters of ink are not calculated, but rather evidence of naturally born vitality.

Everyone lives with “satisfaction” held deep in their hearts.
It may differ from worldly success.
Not fame, not wealth, but something that brings genuine fulfillment to oneself.
To find that, and to continue walking toward it──perhaps that is the essence of life.

The Profound Meaning Within Words

The word “satisfaction” has long been cherished in Japanese culture.
Even in the spirit of bushido, upholding honor and maintaining one’s convictions was considered “achieving satisfaction.”
For those of us living in the modern era, this word has not faded but seems to shine even more brightly.

One’s original desire, true wish──it may sometimes conflict with societal values or the expectations of others.
Yet the characters “satisfaction” that Shourin Iwasaki has infused into his brush speak to us.

“What is your satisfaction?”

Universal Beauty Conveyed Through Calligraphy

The appeal of Shourin Iwasaki’s work lies in how it breathes with contemporary sensibility while being grounded in traditional calligraphy techniques.
The beauty of negative space, the gradations of ink, the momentum of the brush──all of these harmonize and resonate quietly yet certainly in the viewer’s heart.

The seal stamps pressed at the lower left of the work also enhance the completeness of the entire piece.
The vermilion seals breathe life into the monochrome world of ink, serving as visual accents.
