The phrase “new era” in English has always been a symbol of change and hope throughout Japanese history.
The Meiji Restoration, the postwar reconstruction, and the dawn of the Reiwa era were all people’s wishes that could be summed up in the phrase “new era.”
When I gaze upon this work, the four-character idiom “革故鼎新（kaku ko teishin）” (modifying the old and creating something new) comes to mind.
This phrase, which means to reform the old and create something new, is the spirit that Iwasaki Shourin’s brushwork embodies.
That attitude is etched into every stroke of his stroke.
While preserving traditional calligraphy techniques, he pursues expressions that resonate with us living in the modern age – this attitude is engraved in every stroke of his stroke.
The character “新（New）” flows from the top right to the bottom left, like a fresh breeze blowing through.
The character “時（Time）” in the center captures the flow of time in an instant, and the character “代（teenager）” indicates where we are standing at this very moment.
The vermilion seal stamped on the bottom left ties the entire work together and shines quietly as a testament to the calligrapher’s soul.
