What shape does the “想像” in your mind take?
The character “想” (sou) represents the thought of someone in one’s heart.
The powerful brushstrokes at the top represent the will to grasp something.
The gentle curves at the bottom suggest thoughts drifting freely.
The flow that continues to “像” (zo) represents the process by which vague thoughts gradually begin to take shape.
Fantasy, reverie, reverie, meditation—words containing the character “想” are all doors to an inner world.
As the four-character idiom “奇想天外” (kisoutengai) suggests,
imagination transcends the bounds of common sense and shows us views no one has ever seen before.
Iwasaki Shourin’s calligraphy is not simply writing letters.
