A Single Stroke, a Human Heart
The moment the ink meets the paper.
The lines born from the tip of the brush are not merely characters.
The writer’s breath, the pauses, the trembling of the heart — all of it is etched onto the washi paper.
The word calligrapher Shourin Iwasaki chose for this work is “Humanity” (人情, ninjō).
The character “人” (hito, person) stretches bold and free across the upper half.
Below it, “情” (jō, feeling) stands firm, as if rooting itself into the earth.
The interplay of space and tension between the two characters resonates quietly in the chest of all who behold it.

The Depth of the Word “Humanity”
人情 (ninjō) — the dictionary defines it as “the emotions and affections naturally held by human beings; a heart of compassion toward others.”
Yet the depth this word carries extends far beyond any dictionary definition.
The Japanese language is rich with expressions rooted in ninjō:
- 人情味 (ninjōmi) — human warmth; the richness of feeling and compassion
- 人情紙風船 (ninjō kamifūsen) — a metaphor for the fragility of human kindness, as fleeting as a paper balloon
- 浪花節的人情 (naniwa-bushi-teki ninjō) — the distinctly Japanese sensibility of honoring duty and cherishing deep human bonds
Among four-character idioms (yojijukugo):
- 義理人情 (giri-ninjō) — honoring duty and treasuring compassion for others; a phrase that speaks to the very foundation of Japanese spiritual culture
- 人情世態 (ninjō-seitai) — an expression encompassing human emotion and the state of the world as one
- 厚情篤意 (kōjō-tokui) — deep compassion and a sincere, wholehearted spirit
In the Edo period, the haiku master Matsuo Bashō wrote:
行く春や 鳥啼き魚の 目は泪
Spring is passing — the birds cry out, and tears fill the eyes of the fish.
A verse that layered human feeling onto the shifting face of nature.
Calligraphy, too, is an art that makes the invisible emotions visible.

Humanity in the Modern Brushstroke

In today’s world, ruled by the digital.
An age where we connect through social media and AI weaves words — it is worth pausing to ask:
Have we forgotten humanity?
Not the “like” from somewhere behind a screen, but the warmth of the person right beside us.
Not fingertips tapping on a keyboard, but the tremble in a hand gripping a brush.
Perhaps that is the quiet question Shourin Iwasaki has woven into this work.
It is often said that the character “人” is formed by two strokes leaning against each other in mutual support.
We cannot stand alone.
It is because someone else is there that a person can truly be a person.
The character “情” carries within it the radical for “heart” (忄, risshinben).
Emotion, passion, compassion — every movement born from the heart is gathered into this single character.
When “人” and “情” stand side by side, what is born between them is proof itself that human beings are human.
