Mimicry — Are You Living as Your True Self? A question from the soul, written by calligrapher Shourin Iwasaki.

The Invisible Question Spoken by Ink.

What words do you receive when you stand before a single work of calligraphy?

The latest piece by calligrapher Shourin Iwasaki is: “Mimicry.”

Bold brushstrokes cutting across the page, a quiet tension spreading through the white space around them.
The black ink and empty silence transcend mere characters, speaking directly to the heart of the viewer.
This work carries within it something beyond technique or beauty — a profound question.

Are you living as your true self, right now — ?

The Depth of the Word “Mimicry”

In biological terms, “mimicry” refers to the phenomenon in which an organism resembles its surrounding environment or another species in form, shape, or color in order to protect itself from predators.
Insects that dissolve into bamboo leaves, butterflies that mimic the colors of poisonous creatures.
In nature, mimicry is a strategy for survival.

Yet when transposed into human society, this word takes on a far more complex hue.

At work, we perform the role of the “capable professional.”
On social media, we project a “fulfilling life.”
In front of family, we wear the mask of the “dependable one.”
Before we know it, we can no longer tell where our true selves have gone.

All of us, living in the modern world, go through each day practicing some form of mimicry — whether we realize it or not.

Tracing the words related to this concept reveals even greater depth.

虚飾Pretense” — concealing the truth behind decoration.
仮面Mask” — that which covers one’s true face.
韜晦Dissimulation” — the deliberate concealment of one’s true talents or intentions.

And among four-character idioms, there is the Japanese expression “羊頭狗肉(ようとうくにく)” — literally “sheep’s head, dog’s meat” — meaning that appearances differ from reality.
It speaks to the growing divide between the face one shows the world and the true nature within.

As these words suggest, mimicry is not always something negative.
At times it becomes armor that protects us; at times, a cocoon that allows us to heal.
But — are we not locking our true selves inside that mimicry?

The Brush Does Not Lie

Shourin Iwasaki’s calligraphy poses these questions quietly, yet with great force.

In the art of calligraphy, the brush reflects the artist’s inner world exactly as it is.
Hesitation creates wavering lines; too much tension causes the ink to bleed.
No matter how much one tries to put on a facade, the tip of the brush is always honest.
A calligrapher must stand before the paper completely, utterly bare.

In the act of writing the characters for “mimicry,” Shourin Iwasaki himself must have confronted that very question.

Within the powerful strokes of the written characters, there is a certain fragility.
In the place where bold, surging lines intersect with faded, dry brushwork and white space, the essence of humanity seems to be distilled — strength and weakness, the self we show the world, and the self we keep hidden.

The soul clothed in mimicry waits for the day it will finally spread its true wings.

Where Words and Ink Converge

Shourin Iwasaki’s works transcend the boundaries of calligraphy, entering into deep dialogue with the very meaning of words themselves.
He continues to create pieces that breathe stories into one or two characters, resonating with the individual life of each viewer.

“Mimicry” is a piece that embodies Shourin Iwasaki’s artistic vision.

Whatever you felt when you encountered this work — that feeling itself may serve as a mirror, reflecting your own mimicry and your own true nature.
