This is the phrase that calligrapher Shourin Iwasaki chose to write for his latest work:
“Love grows through sharing; let’s spread it generously” (愛は分かち合うことで育つ 惜しみなく広げよう)
Written in flowing columns from right to left, the characters are brushed onto softly grey-toned washi paper with strokes that are at once bold and tender — as if the words themselves are breathing.
The commanding weight of the kanji 愛 (“love”) stands in gentle contrast to the graceful, sweeping curves of the hiragana that close the piece.
That interplay gives this work its distinctive rhythm and warmth.

The Depth of “Sharing”
The Japanese verb wakachi-au (分かち合う) carries a meaning far richer than simply dividing something in half.
In classical Japanese, wakatsu (分かつ) was used in phrases like kokoro wo wakatsu — “to share one’s heart” — meaning to hold both joy and sorrow together with another person.
While the English word share captures part of this meaning, wakachi-au carries an unmistakably active quality: reaching out, stepping closer, offering a piece of yourself.
It is an accumulation of warm, deliberate gestures — and that spirit lives inside the word.
Love, too, works in just this way.
It is not a “thing” that diminishes when given away, but an “act” that grows richer with every offering.
Both the giver and the receiver are filled — that is the quiet miracle at the heart of love.
Four-Character Wisdom: Yojijukugo and the Language of Love
Encountering this work naturally calls to mind several classical Japanese yojijukugo — four-character idioms — that have been passed down through the language for centuries.
博愛衆済 — Hakuai-Shūsai To love all people broadly and bring relief to many. This phrase resonates deeply with the spirit of spreading love generously, without reservation.
慈悲無量 — Jihi-Muryō Rooted in Buddhism, this phrase expresses a compassion so vast it cannot be measured. Perhaps love, at its truest, is boundless in exactly this way.
愛別離苦 — Aibetsu-Riku The suffering of parting from those we love. This, too, is testimony to love’s depth — we grieve because we have loved deeply. The word sodatsu (“to grow”) in Shourin’s phrase holds the power to embrace even this kind of ache.
温故知新 — Onko-Chishin To reflect on the old in order to discover the new. The art of calligraphy itself stands on centuries of brushwork, and from that deep tradition, it continues to give voice to words for today. In Shourin Iwasaki’s work, the classical and the contemporary exist in quiet harmony.
Reading This Work Like a Poem
Love is not a vessel.
The more you pour, the more it overflows.
With every act of sharing, it takes root.
With every hand it reaches, it grows a new branch.
Do not hold back, says the brush.
The more you withhold, the more it fades.
