A Single Truth, Dwelling in the Scent of Ink.
On white paper, characters written stroke by stroke with a devoted soul speak quietly to those who behold them.
“Love is the strongest force; it heals and uplifts.”
When I first laid eyes on this new work by calligrapher Shourin Iwasaki, I was momentarily left speechless.
The brushstrokes — powerful yet gentle — felt as though they were breathing, transcending the mere notion of “characters” on a page.
Calligraphy is a remarkable art form.
Even when the same words are written, the artist’s state of mind, the rhythm of his breath, even the faintest tremor in the hand holding the brush — all of it appears honestly on the paper.
The reason Shourin Iwasaki’s works move people’s hearts is surely because they carry not just technique, but the artist’s very soul.ed into just a few characters.

The Infinite Power Held Within the Character “Love”
Tracing the origins of the kanji for “love” (愛), one can see the image of a person walking while cradling their heart.
Perhaps love is, at its core, “the strength to keep moving forward while holding what is most precious close to your chest.”
Throughout history, countless words and phrases have been born from love.
Hakuai (博愛) — Universal love; loving all people without distinction. A warm gaze bestowed equally upon every individual.
Jiai (慈愛) — A deep, compassionate love that wraps others in kindness. A pure, selfless affection — like the love a parent pours into a child, expecting nothing in return.
Aibetsu Riku (愛別離苦) — A four-character Buddhist idiom meaning “the suffering of being separated from those we love.” It is precisely because love exists that the pain of loss also arises. And yet, people never cease to love — because love itself is the very meaning of being alive.
Jin’ai (仁愛) — A word that unites “benevolence” (仁, a core Confucian virtue) with “love” (愛). The pinnacle of human virtue: to treat others with sincere compassion and care.
As these words collectively show, “love” is far more than a mere emotion.
It is strength, will, and a way of living.

Healing Is Born from Love

Look up the word “healing” in a dictionary and you will find: “to ease pain or suffering.”
Yet standing before Shourin Iwasaki’s work, one comes to sense that healing wells up from somewhere far deeper.
Why does a wounded heart recover?
Perhaps it is because, in the moment we feel someone’s love, we are reminded once more: I am not alone.
Stroke by stroke, the ink seeps into the paper — and in the same way, love seeps quietly, gradually, into the innermost depths of the heart.
Without haste, without force, simply being there.
It is that kind of love that heals people in the truest sense.
Perhaps love is like a gentle rain.
Not a storm of emotion, but a rain that slowly soaks into parched earth and, in time, coaxes the flowers of life to bloom.
“It Uplifts” — Love Nurtures the Human Spirit
Love holds not only the power to heal, but also the power to uplift.
When we feel loved, we are mysteriously moved to think: I want to become a better version of myself.
We find the strength to strive for someone else’s sake.
We scale walls we could never have climbed alone — borrowing the power of love to carry us over.
Sessa Takuma (切磋琢磨) — A four-character idiom meaning to polish and refine one another, like jade and stone being ground smooth; to grow and improve by mutually inspiring each other. This, too, is an endeavor made possible only where love exists.
The world of calligraphy may be no different.
The affection flowing between master and student, the reverence and gratitude felt toward those who came before, the love for one’s own hidden potential — it is within this continuous thread of “love” that a single work is born.
When Shourin Iwasaki chose these words, he surely already knew: love does not merely heal — it draws out the most beautiful parts of a person and lifts them higher.
Calligraphy Breathes Life into Words
In a digital age, why calligraphy?
One look at Shourin Iwasaki’s work, and the answer becomes clear.
There is a trembling that no font can replicate.
Within that trembling lives the artist’s emotion, the atmosphere of a particular day, something that can only be described as a prayer.
Reading the words “Love is the strongest force” in printed type and seeing them rendered in brushstrokes of ink — each one laid down with the full weight of the heart — are two entirely different experiences.
The characters are breathing.
To encounter a work that makes you feel this way is, in this era, something truly precious.
