The Power of Stillness, Born from a Single Stroke.
Ink dances across white paper.
Bold and dynamic, yet tracing curves that are somehow tender — the single character “Healing” slowly fills the space around it.
The first time I encountered this work from the brush of calligrapher Shourin Iwasaki, I was wrapped in a feeling I couldn’t quite name.
Before I even tried to read the word, its form — that stark contrast of black against white — seeped quietly into the deepest part of my chest.
Perhaps this is the power of calligraphy: something that transcends language itself.

The Depths of the Word “Healing”
The kanji character for “Healing” originally carried the meaning of “recovering from illness” or “a wound mending itself.”
Yet in the modern world, the contexts in which this word appears have grown far broader and far deeper.
癒し (Iyashi) — Healing : the gentle unwinding of a weary heart.
癒着 (Yuchaku) — Adhesion : two things bound together so deeply they cannot part.
治癒 (Chiyu) — Recovery : the complete restoration of health from illness or injury.
And when we look to four-character idioms:
「心身癒合」(Shinshin Yugō) — Union of Mind and Body : the state in which heart and body become one, restoring their original harmony.
Embedded within the character for “Healing” is more than the mere disappearance of pain — it holds the meaning of something lost returning to its original form.
Not just physical recovery, but the heart reclaiming its natural calm, the soul finding its rest.
The word carries that depth within it.

Finding Another “Healing” within the Ink

When Shourin Iwasaki brushed this character onto paper, what thoughts and feelings were held within the tip of his brush?
Gazing at the work, one notices that the flow of the ink is almost like water.
One stroke sweeps out in a great arc; the next is short and forceful.
That rhythm — the ebb and surge, the strength and the restraint — feels like breathing.
Calligraphy, perhaps, is nothing less than a record of breath.
The way a person breathes in the moment they hold the brush is inscribed, just as it is, onto the paper.
What did Shourin Iwasaki feel as he set out to write “Healing”?
What was his breath like in that instant?
That very question draws the viewer into a deep and wordless stillness.
When Words Take Shape
Since ancient times, kanji have been understood not as mere symbols, but as the very form of meaning itself.
When we break down the character for “Healing,” we find the radical for illness (病垂れ, yamaidare) enclosing the character 俞 (yu).
In its oldest usage, 俞 depicted a boat moving steadily along a river — and came, by extension, to mean “things progressing well” or “moving in a good direction.”
In other words, “Healing” means this: navigating through illness and suffering like a boat, and emerging on the other side.
Without stopping.
Without rushing.
Simply entrusting oneself to the current — and arriving, in time, at a quiet and peaceful place.
Looking at Shourin Iwasaki’s work, I felt I could see the traces of exactly that kind of journey.
Bringing “Healing” into Everyday Life
How deeply, in the midst of our restless days, do we long for healing?
Unable to put down our phones, swept along by wave after wave of information, we find our hearts have grown rough without us even noticing.
It is precisely in an age like this that the power of a single work of calligraphy becomes so great.
A white sheet of paper, generous with empty space.
At its center, one large character.
It says nothing — and yet it says everything.
Simply hanging this “Healing” in a corner of your room changes the air of the entire space.
In the morning, you wake and your eyes meet it.
In the evening, you come home exhausted and it is there to welcome you.
Not as a word, but as a form, as a breath — it simply exists there.
That is the quiet, enduring strength of calligraphy as an art.
