Breaking down the kanji reveals something profound. The character “協” is composed of “十” (many) and “力” (strength), representing the image of many forces becoming one.
“力” on its own is said to be a pictograph of a person straining their arm in labor.
In other words, cooperation carries within it a primal image — individual strengths gathering together to give rise to something greater.
Words built around cooperation are woven throughout our daily lives:
- 相互協力 (sōgo kyōryoku — mutual cooperation) — helping and supporting one another
- 協力一致 (kyōryoku icchi — united cooperation) — aligning hearts and giving one’s full effort toward a shared purpose
- 官民協力 (kanmin kyōryoku — public-private cooperation) — government and citizens joining hands to shape society
There is also a classical four-character idiom: 戮力協心 (riku ryoku kyōshin) — to combine strength and unite the heart in pursuit of a common goal.
It stands as proof that, since ancient times, people have carved the sacredness of living together into language itself.
