A Prayer of Truth in Every Stroke: Decorating Your Life with “Sincerity”
On a white canvas of paper, black ink carves a path—quietly, yet with undeniable strength.
The two characters I have laid down are “Sincerity.”
In our modern lives, we are surrounded by an endless flood of words.
Information rushing through social media feeds, formal greetings in business, or the facades we wear to protect ourselves.
In this constant noise, we sometimes lose sight of our “true heart.”
What, then, is “Sincerity”?
In Japanese, we call it Magokoro. It refers to a heart that is pure, without falsehood or decoration.
When I face these characters through my brush, they transcend a mere definition; they feel like the very essence of “life’s purity.”
The Poetic World of Japanese “Sincerity”
The Japanese language possesses many beautiful expressions rooted in Sincerity.
For instance, there is the phrase “Tansei o komeru” (丹精込める), which means to put one’s whole heart and soul into a task.
The character Tan (丹) signifies “red,” representing a sincere heart stripped bare.
It means facing a task as if carving out one’s own soul.
This is how I strive to approach every piece of calligraphy.
Then there is the four-character idiom “Seishin Seii” (誠心誠意): to act with a truthful heart and a sincere mind.
In this work, the first vertical stroke of “Shin” (真 – Truth) pierces upward toward the heavens, representing an honesty that fears no judgment.
The soft, flowing curves of “Kokoro” (心 – Heart) express a compassion that embraces everything.
Poetically speaking, Sincerity is like a “still lake deep within the soul.”
The surface may ripple in the wind or become clouded at times, but if you dive deep enough, you will find water so clear it remains untainted.
My calligraphy is the act of scooping up a single drop of that water and setting it upon the paper.
Why We Seek “Sincerity” Today
In an era where efficiency and speed are paramount, Sincerity may seem inefficient.
Taking the time to care for others and to quiet one’s own mind is a slow process.
Yet, that is exactly why we need it.
When we encounter something created by someone who has poured their “Sincerity” into it—whether for a loved one or a stranger—our hearts are deeply moved.
Handwritten characters capture the creator’s warmth, their breath, and the state of their soul in that very moment.
They possess fluctuations, blurs, and fades that digital fonts can never replicate.
It is within this very imperfection that human “Sincerity” resides.
When this piece, “Sincerity,” is displayed in your room: I hope that in those brief moments your eyes meet the ink, it serves as a gentle nudge, reminding you, “I am enough as I am,” or “Today, I will speak from the heart.”
