The soul that resides in each strokeーThe world of “craftsmanship” depicted by calligrapher Shourin Iwasaki

Time stands still the moment the ink touches the washi paper.

The character “匠” (Takumi) born from the brush of calligrapher Iwasaki Shourin is more than just an ordinary character.
Amidst the powerful brushstrokes, one can sense the artist’s delicate breathing.

Although thick, bold lines dominate the picture plane,
the stillness created by the blurred lines and white space captures the viewer’s heart and never lets go.

What is a “Takumi”?

The original meaning of these characters refers to a craftsman with outstanding skills, or the skill itself.
Words like “master,” “master craftsman,” and “artisanal spirit” convey more than just high levels of skill.
It is the sensitivity honed through years of training, the sincerity to put soul into the work,
and the inquisitiveness to continue pursuing perfection.

The four-character idiom “dokugusōshin” (one of a kind) means unique, original ingenuity.
This is certainly the case with Iwasaki Shōrin’s calligraphy.
While carrying on traditional calligraphy techniques,
his brushwork breathes new life into the hearts of those of us living in the modern age.

When you look at this character for “master,”
you can feel the calligrapher’s passion,
as he elevates even the trembling of the hand holding the brush into a form of meticulous beauty.
The concentration put into each and every stroke.
Regulating your breathing, clearing your mind, and putting everything on the line in one moment.
That tension manifests itself before our eyes as the shades of ink and the strength of the lines.

The seal stamped in the lower left corner is also an important element in completing the balance of the entire work. The red seal creates a contrast with the black ink, and is the final stroke that breathes life into the work.

Calligraphy is not about writing letters.
It is about capturing the heart.
Iwasaki Shourin’s “Takumi” is proof that the calligrapher himself is a “master,”
and is a work that asks the viewer, “What is true skill?”

On his Instagram, he writes about his daily creative activities and his thoughts on his work.
We hope you will come and see for yourself the story behind how a piece of calligraphy is born.
