The Calligraphy of “Thanks” Born Through a Magnitude 6+ Earthquake — Warmth of Bonds Infused in Ink

On December 8th, a magnitude 6+ earthquake struck the Tōhoku region.

After the shaking subsided, messages began flooding in one after another.
Friends living outside the prefecture, my former boss from when I worked in Tokyo, seniors, colleagues, and juniors.
Even from people I don’t usually keep in touch with, words of concern arrived: “Are you okay?” “Are you safe?”

As I read each message on my screen, I felt something profound.
Even though we’re physically far apart, our hearts are this deeply connected.
Even if we’ve grown distant in the busyness of daily life, there are people who think of me when it matters.
How reassuring and grateful I am for this fact.

I desperately wanted to give form to this overflowing feeling of thanks.

With that thought, I took up my brush, and this work “Thanks (kansha)” was born.

Feelings Infused in the Work

The powerful ink strokes represent the strength of the people of Tōhoku, who don’t yield to the tremors.
And above all, they express the strength of the invisible bonds connecting people.
Each stroke carries my thanks to every person who reached out to me.

Calligraphy expresses not only the meaning of the characters but also the state of mind and emotions at that moment through the movement of the brush.
While creating this work, my heart was filled with warm feelings of thanks.
I hope that warmth reaches those who view it through the gradations of ink and the vigor of the brushstrokes.

The Miracle of the “Ordinary” Hidden in Daily Life

Something important that we tend to forget when caught up in the busyness of everyday life — it’s the existence of people who care about us.
It’s hard to notice in the peaceful routine when nothing happens, but when difficult situations arise, I realized anew how deeply human kindness and the warmth of bonds touch the heart.

Calligraphy is an art that can preserve such invisible emotions and feelings in tangible form.
Expressing the depth of thanks that words alone cannot fully convey through ink and paper — I feel this is my role as a calligrapher.

What I Want to Convey Through This Work

I would be happy if those who view this “Thanks” could feel something from it.
