On December 8, 2025, an earthquake with a seismic intensity of upper 6 struck the Tohoku and Hokkaido regions. Hachinohe City in Aomori Prefecture, where I live, was one of the areas that experienced the strongest shaking at upper 6.
At that moment, vivid memories of the great earthquake of March 11, 2011 came flooding back.
Fortunately, there was no tsunami damage this time, but the region suffered tremendous damage including collapsed buildings and sunken roads.
However, it was precisely during such difficult times that I was reminded of something important: the value of mutual support and information exchange with neighboring residents, and the power of the “bond” that connects people to one another.

Feelings Poured Into the Brush

The work “Bond” that I’m introducing today was born from exactly this experience.
The powerful vertical strokes express the strength of people confronting adversity.
The “thread” radical on the left side represents people drawing close together and supporting one another, while the “half” component on the right symbolizes the spirit of sharing with each other.
The gradation created by the varying shades of ink expresses how the light of hope shines through even in the darkness of disaster.
From the vigorous movement of the brush, you should be able to sense the energy of people striving to overcome hardship.

The Healing Power of Calligraphy

Calligraphy possesses a mysterious power.
By pouring one’s heart into each and every stroke, the writer’s feelings dwell in the ink and resonate in the hearts of those who view it.
Through this work “Bond,” I would be grateful if those who have experienced disasters, as well as those who feel loneliness or anxiety in their daily lives, could sense the warmth of human connections.
What I learned from the disaster is that bonds between people, rather than material wealth, are what truly support us.
I want to continue conveying this feeling through calligraphy.
