Ink touches paper. In that instant, time stops.
The work titled “Moment” created by calligrapher Shourin Iwasaki is truly an art form that captures a fragment of time and elevates it into eternal form.
Powerful brushwork, dynamic flowing lines, and the stillness that drifts in the blank spaces.
Before this work, we are reminded of the preciousness of “now, this very time.”

The Philosophy Embedded in the Word “Moment”
A moment signifies a time as brief as a blink.
The character “瞬” (shun) carries the meaning of “to blink,” representing a unit of time so fleeting—the instant of opening and closing one’s eyes—yet so precious.
Since ancient times, this word has been used in numerous expressions.
As the phrase “一瞬千金” (a moment worth a thousand pieces of gold) suggests, a single moment can hold value equal to a thousand gold pieces.
“電光石火の瞬間” (a moment of lightning and flint-spark) describes an extremely brief time, like lightning striking and sparks scattering from stone.
Buddhist terms such as “刹那” (setsuna) and “須臾” (shuyu) also represent the smallest units of time, simultaneously indicating both the transience and the preciousness of existence.
Shourin Iwasaki’s brush captures precisely this “moment.”
The tension before lowering the brush to paper, the sound of ink seeping into the paper, the breath while moving the brush.
Everything is condensed in an instant, manifesting as a one-of-a-kind line that can never be reproduced.

What the Dynamic Ink Conveys

Look at this work.
The character “瞬” (moment/instant) has a momentum as if wind were blowing through it.
The line drawn in a single breath—from the brush’s entry through its movement to its stop—makes you feel even the calligrapher’s heartbeat and breathing.
The faded parts hold lingering resonance, while the areas where ink has bled deeply harbor strong will.
The character “間” (ma/space) presents a contrasting composition that makes you conscious of space.
The “日” (sun) is positioned like a single ray of light streaming into the gate-like structure.
A moment is the point where time and space intersect.
In the flow of time from past to future, “now” alone is the reality we can touch—this work quietly yet certainly speaks this truth to us.
The Spirit of “Ichi-go Ichi-e” in Calligraphy
In the tea ceremony, there is the phrase “一期一会” (ichi-go ichi-e), meaning a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.
Calligraphy is the same.
Even when writing the same characters, the same work can never be created twice.
The temperature and humidity of that day, the condition of the paper, the concentration of the ink, and above all, the state of the calligrapher’s mind.
All these conditions converge, and a line that can only be born in that moment is drawn.
The spirit of this “ichi-go ichi-e” flows steadily through Shourin Iwasaki’s works.
Not calculated beauty, but the harmony of chance and inevitability born from momentary intuition.
Perhaps this connects to the beauty of living itself.
Where Eternity and the Instant Intersect
The term “刹那主義” (setsuna-shugi/momentism) tends to be perceived negatively.
However, originally, living each moment preciously means devoting one’s full effort to this very instant and walking a life without regrets.
Opportunities of “千載一遇” (once in a thousand years), decisions made in “電光石火” (lightning speed)—all exist precisely within the continuous succession of moments.
What Shourin Iwasaki pours into his brush is precisely this philosophy of “living in the now.”
Each stroke represents a choice in each moment of life, a decision, an expression.
