Magic is the art of performing mysterious acts that are impossible for humans to accomplish.
This concept has fascinated people since ancient times and continues to resonate with us throughout the ages.
Here we present a piece of work that powerfully depicts the word “magic” with a brush.
This piece was written by me, calligrapher Iwasaki Shourin.
In fact, I was inspired to write this piece after listening to Spitz’s classic song “Magic Words.”
The song has a special power of words that only two people can understand,
and a warmth that connects hearts even when they cannot meet
– I tried to express that in this piece through the shades of ink and the momentum of the brush.

The invisible power of words
The character “魔” (ma) represents something dangerous,
such as demons or magic, but it also represents the power to attract the heart, such as charm or allure.
On the other hand, “法” (ho) means rules or methods, and is a character that symbolizes orderly integrity.
The word “magic” is created by combining these two opposing letters and has a mysterious power
that transcends existing boundaries.
In this piece, the two characters “ma” (demon) and “ho” (law) are boldly positioned.
The strength of the upper half and the lightness of the lower half seem to be in dialogue, almost like breathing.
It captures the dual nature of words: gentleness and intensity, stillness and movement, light and shadow.
A session of music and calligraphy woven by the brush
There’s a line in Spitz’s “Magic Words” that says that even though words are short,
they have a tremendous effect when spoken.
Just one word can warm someone’s heart,
encourage them, and illuminate their future – I wanted to express with my brush the magical power of such words.
The shades, blurs, and smudges of ink.
The flicks, stops, and sweeps of the brush.
Just like the rhythm and melody of music, waves of emotion are engraved in each and every stroke of calligraphy.
Just as music vibrates the air, calligraphy marks time on paper.
Both contain a “magic” that moves people’s hearts.
