The profound world contained in the character “aya”

“Aya” – what do you feel when you see this character?

The kanji character “aya” is a combination of the “thread” radical and the “ryo” character.
Originally, it referred to the beautiful patterns of diagonally woven silk fabric.
The delicate patterns created by the diagonally intersecting warp and weft threads are the very epitome of harmony.

From there, it has come to also describe “things being beautifully arranged” and “the beauty of words and sentences.”

The word “bunryo” means beautifully decorated writing, and “aya wo nasu” refers to things being skillfully harmonized.

The character “aya” also embodies the layered richness of adding even more beauty to something beautiful,
as in the four-character idiom “kinjotenka” (adding flowers to a beautiful piece).

and the gradation created by the varying shades of ink.
