The Story Woven by the Character “Dance”
“Dance” (舞)—gazing at this kanji evokes a mysterious sensation.
The powerful upward strokes, the flowing curves, and the lingering final line create movement before your eyes.
It’s as if a dancer spinning on stage emerges from within the gradations of ink.
The word “dance” encompasses not only physical expressions like ballet and traditional dance, but also represents the elevation of the spirit.
Four-character idioms such as “kanki yakuyaku” (歓喜雀躍—jumping for joy) and “shubu sokutou” (手舞足踏—dancing with hands and stamping feet) symbolize the fundamental human impulse to express joy through movement.
Shourin Iwasaki’s “Dance” captures this very essence.
The hand holding the brush dances, the ink dances across the paper, and even the viewer’s heart begins to dance—creating a chain reaction of emotion and movement.
“This Moment, Here and Now” Embodied in Calligraphy
